Walter Cutajar

Walter Cutajar is Managing Director of Avanzia Taxand.

With over 20 years experience in local and international tax, Walter maintains a reputation of adopting a commercial approach to his advice. Working with predominantly multi-national companies, he has provided structuring and transactional consultation on the complete range of corporate tax activities, including mergers and acquisitions, company reorganisations and cross-border restructurings.

Walter currently advises a number of multi-national companies and sits on the board of directors of a number of companies including finance companies, captives and investment vehicles.  Aside from his wealth of experience in international tax matters, including tax planning, treaty interpretation and advice, he also has a great deal of knowledge on corporate matters, company law, management, and administration. He specialises in treaty planning, holding companies, intellectual property, and treasury and finance operations.

During his time as a Big 4 partner, he was responsible for the firm’s tax department and was a regular participant in international tax conferences and events. He continues to give various lectures and presentations, and is the author of various taxation articles. For a number of years he was an examiner in taxation with the UK’s Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Walter holds a first degree in Accounting and a post-graduate qualification in International Tax Law. He is a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants, a member of the Institute of Financial Accountants in the UK, a member of the Malta Institute of Taxation, a member of the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners, a member of the International Fiscal Association, and was involved in various councils and committees in the fields of taxation and financial services.

Mary Anne Inguanez

Mary Anne Inguanez is a Director of Avanzia Taxand.

She holds a first degree in Accounting from the University of Malta and a Diploma in Taxation awarded by the Malta Institute of Taxation. She is also a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants, a member of the Malta Institute of Taxation and a member of the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners.

Mary Anne worked for some time in the tax department of one of the Big 4 audit firms before moving to Avanzia Taxand in 2005. She has considerable experience in a number of areas, including corporate tax, personal tax, employment issues, capital gains tax, indirect taxation and liquidations.

She is a tax consultant, advising a number of multi-national companies, financial institutions, funds and high-net worth individuals in her areas of expertise, and is often involved in cross-border financing transactions and reorganisations.

Aside from her experience in local and international tax matters, she assists clients in tax negotiations and in obtaining advance revenue rulings and tax confirmations from the tax authorities.

Dr. James Scerri Worley, B.A., M.A. (Fin. Serv.), LL.D.

Dr. James Scerri Worley is a Director of Avanzia Taxand.

James is practicing lawyer specialising in commercial and financial services legislation. He graduated as a lawyer in 2003 and was admitted to the Maltese Legal Bar in 2004. Pursuant to his B.A (Law and Music) and Doctor of Laws (LL.D) degrees, he also pursued a Masters degree in Financial Services at the University of Malta, focusing mainly on Corporate Law, Funds, Local and International Tax, and Trusts.

James specialises in Corporate Law, Mergers & Acquisitions, Tax, Trusts, Banking & Insurance, and property matters. He acts on behalf of a number of international and local clients including credit and financial institutions, investment and insurance companies, and other trading and holding entities.

James, is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company operating the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, and also serves as a director and company secretary of a multitude of other companies.

James is a member of the Maltese Chamber of Advocates and also of the Maltese Institute of Financial Services Practitioners (IFSP).

Ruth Agius

Ruth Agius is a Corporate Services Officer with Avanzia Taxand.

She holds a Diploma in Management Studies from the University of Malta.  Before joining Avanzia Taxand in 2006, Ruth worked for a number of years with the Malta Financial Services Authority, which is the only regulator in Malta.  She also spent six years of her employment within the International Tax Unit of the Inland Revenue Department which is housed within the MFSA building, handling various tax compliance matters.

Her responsibilities within Avanzia Taxand include company incorporations, due diligence documentation as required by the Prevention of Money Laundering and Funding of Terrorism Regulations, banking matters, share transfers and various statutory issues. She liaises with the International Tax Unit and the Capital Duty Transfers section of the Inland Revenue Department, and is also responsible for company secretarial duties to ensure that companies satisfy their legal obligations under The Companies Act.

Anthony Buttigieg

Anthony is an Associate of the Malta Institute of Accountants. He is currently reading for a degree in accountancy with the Association of Chartered Accountants.

Anthony joined Avanzia Taxand in 2010 and has already gained considerable experience in corporate taxation and personal tax compliance, as well as in employment issues including fringe benefits and capital gains. Anthony deals with a number of clients including multi-national companies, financial institutions and high-net worth individuals.

He is also involved in tax accounting issues, management accounting, reporting and other related areas.

Kane Bugeja

Kane is an Associate of the Malta Institute of Accountants. He is currently reading for a degree in accountancy with the Association of Chartered Accountants.
